Speeding along Coopersale Common has been one of the major concerns raised by villagers. Since June 2020, we have been in regular contact with local town councillors and our Highways Liaison Officer to push for permanent measures that would make this stretch of road safer. Progress has been slow, and despite years of engagement, we are yet to see any meaningful action.
A speed survey carried out in 2023 concluded that there was “no speeding issue” in Coopersale. This assessment was based on average speeds recorded over a prolonged period. For many residents who walk, cross or travel along Coopersale Common, this finding does not reflect their lived experience or the daily risks they observe.
Local people continue to report concerns and contact councillors. The issue remains unresolved, and residents are still calling for effective measures to improve safety on Coopersale Common.
Drive slowly and safely
The best way to ensure our roads are safer is for us to act socially responsible. Please drive 30 mph (or slower) and be aware of pedestrians and wildlife.
Join the Community Speed Watch
Take direct action! Epping Forest District Council is always looking for volunteers to join Community Speed Watch teams. Volunteer training now available.
Email Councillor Janet Whitehouse to get involved.
Increase awareness of the 30 mph speed limit
Buy bin stickers (pictured above) to raise speed awareness.
Whilst the bins signs may only be visible on Monday/Tuesdays, the theory is that irregular signage makes drivers take more notice.
